PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College field hockey student-athletes
Bo Martina and
Macie Pennisi were named to the 2025 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team for on August 26. Martina, a midfielder, was one of three unanimous selections on the 13-player squad.
Martina is coming off a sophomore campaign in which she earned All-BIG EAST First-Team and NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region First-Team honors. She played all 17 games and made 16 appearances in the starting line-up. Martina led the team in scoring with 18 points on five goals and a team-high eight assists. Nine of her 18 points came during BIG EAST regular-season action on three goals and three assists. She was a three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection as well.
Pennisi, a defender, started all 17 games for the Friars in 2024. She finished third on the team in points (12), having recorded five goals and two assists. Her five goals and 12 points marked single-season career highs. She tallied a season-high four points vs. Holy Cross with two goals, marking the first multi-goal game of her career. Pennisi claimed BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept 24 and at the start of the 2024 campaign she was featured on the NFHCA Division I Watch List.
Last season, Providence posted a 3-4 record in BIG EAST regular-season play and finished sixth in the league's final standings. The Friars were picked to finish sixth in this year's BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Three of the Friars' four losses in league play during 2024 were decided by one goal at the hands of then-ranked No. 14 Liberty (2-1), No. 20 Temple (1-0) and Villanova (3-2). Providence defeated UConn for the second-consecutive season in BIG EAST play, taking down the fifth-ranked Huskies, 3-2, in double-overtime on Oct. 18 in Providence, R.I.
Providence is set to open the 2025 season against Boston University on Friday, Aug. 29. The match is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. at New Balance Field in Boston, Mass. and will be streamed live on ESPN+. The Friars will remain on the road to face Holy Cross on Friday, Sept. 5 before hosting Merrimack in their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Noon on Lennon Family Field.
