Field Hockey Takes Down Boston University In A Shootout To Claim A 3-2 Victory

Piper Cline and Johanna Mahner each tallied one goal; Friars used 3-1 edge in shootout to win the game.

BOSTON, MASS. – Providence College and Boston University needed a shootout to decide the winner of the 2025 season opener on Friday, Aug. 29 at New Balance Field in Boston, Mass. The game was tied, 2-2, at the end of regulation and yielded two scoreless overtime sessions before Providence used a 3-1 edge in the shootout to claim victory (3-2). The Friars open the season 1-0, while the Terriers move to 0-1.
 
GAME FLOW:
• Sophomore Piper Cline (West Chester, Pa.) recorded her first career goal just 3:09 into the match to give Providence a 1-0 lead. Junior Carly van Benten (Ashburn, Va.) earned the assist.
• Boston University tied the game, 1-1, with 1:30 left in the first quarter. Nicole Lauro earned the goal on a deflection off a feed from Maggie Driscoll.
• After a scoreless second quarter, the game remained tied, 1-1, at halftime.
• Boston University scored with 45-seconds remaining in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Martu Coulo tallied the go-ahead goal for the Terriers. 
• Providence answered quickly to level the game, 2-2, to start the fourth quarter, as Johanna Mahner (Nuremburg, Germany) scored her first career goal at the left post on a penalty corner. Van Benten picked up the assist, marking her second of the day. The goal came with 13:24 left in the game.
• Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie.
• Providence started the overtime session with a player advantage as Boston University was hit with a green card with 55-seconds left in the fourth quarter.
• After two scoreless overtime sessions, the teams went to a shootout. Providence used a 3-1 edge in the shootout to claim the season-opening win (3-2).
Florencia Talarico (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Macie Pennisi (Raleigh, N.C.) and Charlotte Lorden (Cockeysville, Md.) all scored for Providence in the shootout.
• Freshman goalkeeper Ava Porter (Somerset, Mass.) recorded three saves in the shootout.
• Porter combined for 11 saves in 80 minutes of action spanning regulation and two overtimes and earned her first collegiate victory. 


 
NOTES:
• With Ava Porter's collegiate debut in goal for Providence, the program has had a member of the Porter family in goal for six-consecutive seasons.
• Porter earned her first career win with 11 saves. 
• Pennisi recorded one defensive save for Providence.
• Providence defeated BU for the first time since 2021, snapping a two-game winless streak to the Terriers. Boston University leads the all-time series, 23-13.
• Providence's last shootout victory came during the 2024 season. The Friars defeated Holy Cross, 4-3.
• Providence won its season opener on the road for the first time since 2014. That year, the Friars defeated Vermont, 5-1, in Burlington, Vt.
• Providence claimed victory in a season opener for the first time since 2021, which was a 4-0 win over Bryant.
• Boston University held a 21-17 advantage in shots during the game, including a 14-11 edge in shots on goal.
• Providence held the advantage in penalty corners, 12-8.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will travel to Worcester, Mass. to face Holy Cross in non-conference action on Friday, Sept. 5. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
• The Friars' begin a seven-game home stand on Sunday, Sept. 7 when the program hosts Merrimack in the home opener at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Game time is set for Noon and the match will be streamed on Friars Live.
