Friars Defeat Brown In Thrilling Five-Set Match To Open The Ocean State Cup

The Friars will continue onto game two of the Ocean State Cup tomorrow (Sep. 5) against Bryant at 1 p.m.

KINGSTON R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team (3-1) defeated Brown University (0-1) in five sets (3-2) on Friday, Sept. 4, in its first match of the Ocean State Cup.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Friars won the first set, 25-16, (1-0).

  • The Friars pulled ahead early, 7-3. 
  • Senior Shea Dupuis (Richardson, Texas) added to the Friars' lead with a kill, making it 11-7. 
  • Sophomore Tori Otter (Rogers, Ark.) and junior Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) combined for a block to give Providence an 11-7 lead, forcing Brown to call a timeout. 
  • Providence remained on top with a 21-13 lead, forcing the Bears to call their second timeout. 
  • The Friars won, 25-16, following a set-ending kill from Otter.

SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Brown won the second set, 25-20, to tie the match 1-1.

  • Brown led 3-0 following a three-point run. 
  • Providence cut the deficit to one, with the Bears leading 7-6. 
  • The Friars took a timeout with Brown leading, 13-9. 
  • The Bears extended their lead to 18-11 and forced a Friars timeout. 
  • Providence cut into the deficit, but the Bears took the set, 25-20.

THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the set, 25-20, to take a 2-1 lead.

  • A kill by Otter put the Friars up by two, 5-3. 
  • The Friars took a 10-4 advantage following a kill by Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas). 
  • Brown cut the deficit to one, making the score 17-16. 
  • Providence led 21-17, forcing the Bears to take a timeout. 
  • Senior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) finalized the set, 25-20, with a kill.

FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Bears won the fourth set, 25-22, to tie the match 2-2. 

  • Both teams traded points early and were tied, 6-6. 
  • Senior Shea Dupuis (Richardson, Texas) equalized the score at 12-12 with a kill. 
  • Brown called a timeout after Providence cut the deficit to one. 
  • The Bears led 22-20 before the Friars called a timeout. 
  • Brown won, 25-22, to force a fifth set.

FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars won the fifth set, 15-9, to secure the 3-2 victory.

  • The Friars quickly took a 4-0 lead, forcing a Brown timeout. 
  • Senior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) put the Friars up by six with a kill, forcing the Bears to take their second timeout. 
  • Brown cut the deficit to four, and the Friars took a timeout with an 11-7 lead. 
  • An attack error by Brown put the Friars on top, 15-9, securing the victory.


MATCH NOTES:

  • Senior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) led the team with 12 kills. 
  • Freshman Ava Dyer (Fort Worth, Texas) led the team in digs (25) and service aces (three). 
  • Freshman Aubrey Easterwood racked up 11 kills and a .667 hitting percentage for the Friars. 
  • Providence recorded 57 kills, 86 digs and 13 service aces in the victory.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will play their second match of the Ocean State Cup against Bryant University tomorrow (Sept. 5) at 1 p.m.
