All-American Distinctions
1938–1967: Only the Top 15 finishers at the NCAA Championships earned the title.
1968–1971: The cutoff expanded to the Top 25 finishers.
1972–1997: The rules limited the award to the Top 25 finishers, specifically requiring them to be U.S. born.
1998–2004: The guidelines expanded to the Top 30 finishers, again prioritizing U.S. citizens.
Current Standards: Today, the title is administered by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). It now awards the Top 40 individual finishers at the NCAA Championships with All-American status
