Pittsburgh, Pa. - Providence College volleyball coach Ken Nichols was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year Thursday night at the league's annual awards banquet in Pittsburgh, Pa., while senior setter Colleen Lee (Tonawanda, N.Y.) was named First Team All-BIG EAST and outside hitter Sarah Katinger (So., Stratford, Conn.) was chosen to the Second Team.
Nichols, now in his third season at Providence, led the Friars to a 16-11 overall record and an 8-3 mark in the BIG EAST. His PC squad enters the BIG EAST Tournament seeded third overall after being picked last in the league's preseason poll. The eight BIG EAST wins are the most ever by a Friar team. Nichols owns a 53-39 (.576) career mark going into Friday's BIG EAST Tournament opener versus Syracuse.
Lee, capped an outstanding senior season by being named First Team All-BIG EAST. She is the first PC player selected to the Conference All-Star team since 1996 and the first Friar to be named first team since current PC assistant Aileen Koprowski took honors in 1994.
The Friars' all-time leader in assists with 3,905, Lee led the league in assists per game with 13.23 per game, was first in service aces with 0.64 and third in the league in digs with 3.72 per game. Her 0.64 service aces per game also ranks her seventh in the nation in that category.
Joining Lee on the postseason all-star team is Katinger who was chosen to the Second Team after leading the league in kills with 4.97 per game while being sixth in digs with 3.42 per game. She also ranks 20th in the nation in kills per game. Just a sophomore, Katinger also set the single season record for kills with 482 this season.
The BIG EAST Tournament continues on Saturday with the league's top team, Notre Dame facing the winner of Friday's Rutgers-Connecticut match at noon with second place Georgetown facing the winner of Providence and Syracuse at 2:30 p.m. The tournament is being played at the Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh.
