Volleyball Finishes Out The Holly Young Invitational With A 2-1 Loss To New Hampshire

The Friars posted a 2-1 record during their opening weekend of action.

Durham N.H.- The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by the University of New Hampshire in four sets (3-1) on Saturday, Aug. 29, during its third and final match of the Holly Young Invitational. It marked the Friars first loss of the season as they moved to 2-1 overall. New Hampshire improved to 3-0.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Friars won the first set, 25-21.
  • Freshman Ava Dyer (Fort Worth, Texas) evened the score, 4-4, with a kill.  
  • Providence mounted a 12-8 advantage.
  • New Hampshire took a timeout, trailing 14-12. 
  • The Friars went on a 4-0 run to extend the lead 18-12.
  • The Wildcats battled back and cut the lead to two (22-20). 
  • Junior Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) closed out the set with a kill to make the final score 25-21. 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: New Hampshire took the second set 25-8 to tie the match 1-1.
  • The Wildcats took jumped out to a 16-3 lead.
  • UNH maintained a comfortable lead throughout the set and evened the match with a 25-8 victory.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Wildcats won the set 25-23 and took the match lead 2-1.
  • The Wildcats pulled away with an early lead (8-1) forcing the Friars to call a timeout. 
  • Providence went on a four-point rally to make it a 12-6 game. 
  • The Friars cut the lead to one point (19-18).
  • Redshirt sophomore Sarah Musial (St. Charles, Ill.) recorded a service ace to give the Friars a 23-22 lead.
  • The Wildcats outscored Providence 3-0 to close out the set and take the victory (25-23). 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: New Hampshire won the set, 25-13, and closed out the match, 3-1.
  • Sophomore Kaia Easterbrook registered a kill and kept the Friars within one point New Hampshire (6-5). 
  • Providence took a timeout, trailing 13-9.
  • The Wildcats finished off the set with a 12-6 scoring advantage (25-13). 
MATCH NOTES:
  • Adkins had a team high eight kills. 
  • Musial notched 15 assists in the match. 
  • The Friars recorded six service aces during the match. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will return to play September 4th at the Ocean State Cup in Kingston R.I. They will begin the tournament against Brown University at 4 p.m.
