Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Providence College volleyball team saw its hopes for a BIG EAST Tournament championship dashed on Friday afternoon as the third-seeded Friars fell to the sixth-seeded Syracuse Orange by a 3-2 margin.
PC won the opening game, 15-10, before dropping two in a row, 15-7 and 15-10. The Friars rebounded to win the fourth game, 15-9 before falling in the fifth, 15-11.
The loss ends the Friars' successful season with a 16-12 overall record. The Friars, picked to finish last by the BIG EAST coaches set a PC record with eight league wins as they finished third overall.
Syracuse improves to 23-13 overall with the win and will play the tourney's second-seed, Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.
The Friars were led by Second Team All-BIG EAST selection Sarah Katinger (So., Stratford, Conn.) who recorded a team best 22 kills with 14 digs. Sophomore Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, Ill.) added 20 kills to go with 20 digs in the game.
First Team All-BIG EAST setter Colleen Lee (Sr., Tonawanda, N.Y.) closed out her brilliant PC career with 59 assists giving her the PC single season record with 1,342. She holds the school's career record with 3,964.
Providence will return a strong nucleus for next season as they lose just two seniors to graduation, Lee and outside hitter Brooke Chupaila (Liverpool, N.Y.)
Syracuse was led by Second Team All-BIG EAST selection Dana Fiume who had 30 kills and just seven errors for a .383 hitting percentage.
