ORONO, Maine. -- The No. 1 ranked Maine Black Bears defeated the Providence College Friars, 5-2, in HOCKEY EAST action on Sunday, November 7 in Orono, Maine. The Friars entered the game looking to end their two-game losing streak, but were overcome by a strong second period surge by the Black Bears and were defeated for the third straight game.

The Friars had several excellent chances in the first minute of action, but it was the Black Bears who capitalized first when Doug Janik blasted a shot from the right point that went through the pads of PC goaltender Boyd Ballard at 1:02. Maine struck again quickly in the first period when Matthias Trattnig came out of the right corner and wristed a shot by Ballard on the short side during a power play at the 4:39 mark. The Black Bears had trouble staying out of the penalty box after establishing the lead and the Friars quickly took advantage. Maine was whistled for four consecutive penalties and PC scored on two of the opportunities to even the game at 2-2. Josh MacNevin got the Friars on the scoreboard with a low wrist shot that eluded Maine goaltender Mike Morrison low to the stick side during a five-on-three power play at 8:31 of the first. Jason Ialongo tied the game when he intercepted a clearing pass while in a man-advantage situation and snapped in a low shot at 11:21 of the first period.

Maine regained the lead 33 seconds into the second period when Niko Dimitrakos skated in on the power play and flipped a low shot past Ballard. The Black Bears increased their lead to 4-2 when Lucas Lawson wristed in a rebound at 5:45 of the second period. Cory Larose netted Maine's third power-play goal of the contest at 10:11 of the second period when he fired a high shot from the right point that beat Ballard over the left shoulder. After allowing the fifth Maine goal, Ballard was replaced in the Providence net by freshman goaltender Nolan Schaefer.

Schaefer played strong for the Friars in the third period, holding the Black Bears scoreless.

With the win, Maine raised its record to 6-0-1 overall and in 1-0-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Providence fell to 2-4 overall and in 0-2 league play.

The Friars will return to action on Friday, Nov. 12 against the University of New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m. in Durham, N.H.
