PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (9-7, 3-5) HOCKEY NOTES:
FRIARS DEFEAT DARTMOUTH... In their only game of the weekend, the Providence College Friars posted a 2-0 win against Dartmouth on December 10 at Schneider Arena. Junior defensemen Mike Farrell (Carmel, Indiana) and Jay Leach (Altamont, N.Y.) each scored for PC. Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) recorded 30 stops in his third career shutout.
SHEPPARD RECORDS TWO ASSISTS... Senior captain Doug Sheppard, who leads the Friars in scoring (22 points), goals (10) and power-play goals (eight), recorded two assists in PC's 2-0 win against Dartmouth on December 10. For Sheppard, it was his seventh multiple-point game of the season. He was named HOCKEY EAST Player of the Month for November after recording 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in eight games. On November 27, Sheppard recorded four points (one goal, three assists) in the Friars' 7-3 win against WCHA foe Denver. Sheppard earned HOCKEY EAST Player of the Week accolades after registering five points (three goals, two assists), including a hat trick, in PC's two wins against Northeastern on November 19-20.
BALLARD RECORDS THIRD SHUTOUT... Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) recorded 30 saves and posted his third career shutout in the Friars' 2-0 win against Dartmouth on December 10 at Schneider Arena. Ballard has started 10 of the team's 16 games this season and posted a 5-5 mark, a 2.74 goals against average and a .906 save percentage.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE VS. NON-LEAGUE OPPONENTS... This season, the Friars have compiled a 6-2 record against non-league opponents. PC has a 2-1 mark against CCHA teams, a 2-0 record versus ECAC teams and a 2-1 record against WCHA teams. In 1998-99, the Friars recorded a 6-4 mark against non-league opponents.
NEXT GAMES... PC will return to action at the RPI Tournament on December 29-30 in Troy, N.Y. PC will face Union in the first game at 5:30 p.m. The following night, the Friars will play RPI or Bowling Green at 5:30 or 8:30 p.m.
PC AT THE RPI HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT... The Friars will be participating in their eighth RPI Holiday Tournament on December 29-30. PC has won four of the seven Holiday Tournaments it has participated in at RPI.
THE PROVIDENCE-UNION SERIES... Providence holds a 3-1 mark all-time against Union College. In their last meeting, the Friars defeated the Skating Dutchmen, 5-4 in overtime on October 25, 1997 at Schneider Arena. In the first game ever between the two teams, PC defeated Union, 7-5, on October 28, 1994 at Schneider Arena. The Friars' only loss to Union was a 2-0 shutout on November 1, 1996. The two teams have never played on neutral ice.
THE PROVIDENCE-BOWLING GREEN SERIES... The Friars have registered a 2-4 mark all-time against Bowling Green. In the first meeting ever between the two teams, PC defeated the Falcons, 5-2, at the Houston Field House to win the RPI Tournament on January 4, 1970. PC's last loss to Bowling Green was a 3-2 defeat on November 17, 1979 at the Falcon Arena. PC's most recent victory against Bowling Green was a 9-6 win at the Falcon Arena on January 5, 1973.
THE PROVIDENCE-RPI SERIES... Providence leads the all-time series against RPI, 24-22-4. The two teams first met on February 13, 1953 with RPI defeating Providence, 13-1, at the RPI Field House. The PC and RPI last met on Dec. 30, 1995 with the Friars earning a 3-2 win in the consolation game of the RPI Holiday Tournament. PC last loss to the Engineers was a 5-3 defeat on October 30, 1992 at the Houston Field House.
AT HOUSTON FIELD HOUSE... The Friars have posted a 12-15-3 record against RPI at the Houston Field House. PC's last win against RPI at the Houston Field House was a 3-2 victory at the RPI Holiday Tournament on December 30, 1995. PC's last loss to RPI at the Houston Field House was a 5-3 defeat on Oct. 30, 1992.
NCAA TITLE GAME... The most memorable meeting ever between RPI and PC was at the 1985 NCAA Championship at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. The Engineers defeated PC, 2-1, to win their second national championship in ice hockey. Rensselaer scored an early power-play goal by Neil Hernberg and George Servinis added a shorthanded goal in the second period for a 2-0 lead. Paul Cavallini scored the Friars' lone goal at the 10:00 mark of the third period. RPI goaltender Darren Puppa stopped 21 of the 22 Friar shots in the win. Chris Terreri made 40 saves in the loss.
