PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the University of Rhode Island Rams, 73-52, in women's college basketball action on Friday, December 3, at PC's Alumni Hall. Providence senior Meghan Hinds (Perrysburg, Ohio) scored a team-high 16 points, including 12 in the second half, to lead the Friar offense.
The Friars controlled the first half, opening a 19-6 lead with 10:54 to play in the period. Rhode Island contributed to the first half deficit by shooting only 32 percent from the floor. Providence extended the lead to 17 points, before heading to the locker room leading 32-25. Farrah Tomas (Newport, Ark.) registered seven points to lead all Friars in the first half.
Providence opened the second half right were they left off, with an 8-2 run to extending the lead to 14 points. Rhode Island center Lyrica Smith tried to keep the Rams close, (19 points, 6 rebounds) but the Friars were just too much down to stretch, shooting 51 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the three point line in the second half.
Thomas, (10 points) Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.), (14 points, 9 rebounds) and Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.), ( 9 points, 13 rebounds) all contributed to the Friar attack
Rhode Island's Cassandra Dobbs added 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Friars improve to 2-3 on the season, while Rhode Island drops to 0-3. Providence returns to action on Wednesday, December, 8 at the West Virginia University at 7:00 p.m..
