Friar Women Defeat Villanova In Overtime, 81-73

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Villanova, 81-73 in overtime in front of 852 fans in Alumni Hall. With the score tied 68-68 at the end of regulation, Providence controlled the five minutes in overtime scoring on every possession and gaining a 13-5 edge.
Sophomore Monika Roberts (Antioch, CA) tallied a career high 27 points (8-14 FG, 9-11 FT) and pulled down seven boards leading her squad to their third victory of the season. Sophomore Jen Gombotz (Southington, CT) tallied 16 points while junior co-captain Meghan Hinds (Toledo, OH) tallied 14 points which included eight in overtime.
Providence recorded a season best of 48% from the floor (26-54 FG) while Villanova shot 40% for the game. The Friars also converted 27 of 33 free-throws and 8 of 9 in the overtime session.
In regulation, Villanova's Shanette Lee tied the game with :07 remaining with a layin under the hoop.
The Friars improve to 3-12 and 2-6 in the BIG EAST while Villanova falls to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the BIG EAST. Providence hosts #23 Boston College on Tuesday evening, January 19 at 7:00 pm in Alumni Hall.
