PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Friars defeated the Merrimack College Warriors, 3-2 , in overtime of HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, December 4 at PC's Schneider Arena.
The Friars tallied the only goal of the first period at 19:45 when Matt Libby picked up a rebound off Jerry Keefe's blast and wristed a shot over Merrimack goaltender Tom Welby who was sprawled on the ice.
In an exciting second period of action, both teams combined for 31 shots on net with the Warriors tallying the only goal of the period. PC goaltender Mark Kane made 14 stops in the second 20 minutes of play, but Merrimack scored a fluke goal when Kris Porter fired a pass from behind the net which deflected off a PC player into the Friar goal to tie the game at 1-1 at the 3:55 mark.
The Friars took a 2-1 lead just 1:55 into the third period when Fernando Pisani blasted a shot from the right point that beat Welby high to the glove side on the power play. Drew Hale evened the game for Merrimack with 9:23 remaining in the contest as he rifled in a wrist shot from 15 feet in front of the net.
With the game tied at 2-2 in overtime, PC took advantage of a three-on-one breakaway to tally the game-winning goal. Mike Omicioli fired a shot on goal that Welby saved, but was not able to control the rebound and Omicioli wristed it high into the net for the game winner at 1:09 of the extra period.
Both goaltenders played strong in net. Kane registered 28 saves for the Friars and Welby recorded 40 stops for the Warriors.
With the win, Providence raised its record to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in HOCKEY EAST action, while Merrimack fell to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Providence College will return to action against Dartmouth College on Friday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Hanover, N.H.
