BOSTON, Mass. - - Doug Sheppard scored two goals to lead the Providence College Friars to a 5-3 win over the Northeastern Huskies on Friday, January 8, 1999 in Boston, Mass.
Northeastern took advantage of its first power-play opportunity as Bob Haglund skated into the Friar zone and fired the puck past PC goaltender Boyd Ballard at the 4:47 mark of the first period. Jason Ialongo evened the game for the Friars when he blasted a shot from outside the blue line which NU netminder Jason Braun saved but could not control as it trickled over his glove into the net at 8:26 of the first.
PC took its first lead of the game when Jon Cameron redirected a pass in mid air during a power play past Braun at 4:23 of the second period. The Friars added to their lead at 7:26 of the second period with a short-handed goal. Drew Omicioli broke the puck in on Braun and fed a pass to Doug Sheppard who put the puck in the open net. Northeastern cut into the Friar lead when Willie Levesque stole the puck while forechecking and passed to Graig Mischler who rifled a shot past Ballard at 13:28 of the second period.
The Friars regained their two-goal lead when Rich Miller blasted a shot from the point that Doug Sheppard tipped past Braun at 6:04 of the third period. Fernando Pisani netted the Friars' fifth goal of the contest when he picked up a rebound and slid a low shot into the cage at 16:58 of the third. NU's Mike Jozefowicz tallied the final goal of the game during a power play with 1:27 remaining in the game.
With the win, Providence raised its record to 9-8 overall , while Northeastern fell to 6-11-1 overall .
Providence returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 9 against Northeastern at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
