PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Forward Shawnetta Stewart and guard Natasha Pointer scored 21 points apiece as No. 15 Rutgers celebrated moving into first place in the Big East by blasting Providence College 99-52 on Sunday.
Rutgers (17-3, 9-0) moved into first place in the conference Saturday night when Boston College upset No. 2 Connecticut. The Scarlet Knights and Huskies (16-3, 9-1) meet Wednesday night at Rutgers with first place at stake.
Rutgers, a Big East member since the 1995-96 season, has never been in first place in the conference this far into the season.
The Scarlet Knights, winners of seven games in a row and 10 of their last 11, outscored Providence 51-18 in the second half after building a 14-point halftime lead. Rutgers shot 65 percent from the floor, including 70 percent (21-30) in the second half.
Stewart snared a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with her 21 points, while Pointer dished out a game-high 12 assists.
Guard Chrissy Vozab's 13 points led Providence (3-14, 2-8), which has lost seven of its last eight games. The Friars shot just 26 percent from the floor, including 18 percent (7-37) in the second half.
