PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Assistant Vice President for Athletics John Marinatto today announced the appointment of Joe Crehan as the interim head coach of the women's soccer team at the College. Crehan replaces Liz Wynn who resigned earlier in the month after coaching the women's team for two seasons.

Crehan has been an assistant coach at Providence College for the past three seasons. During the 1995 and 1996 seasons he served as the goalkeeper coach for the men's team and helped Friar goalkeeper Dan Pires earn Second-Team All-BIG EAST honors in 1996.

Last season, Crehan was the assistant coach for the PC women's soccer team. A native Walpole, Mass., Crehan began his coaching career in 1987 as an assistant soccer coach at Walpole High School. He also served as an assistant coach for the men's teams at Dean Junior College (1993) and Bryant College (1991-92).

Crehan is currently in his third year as the director of goalkeeping for the Olympic Development Program for the state of Rhode Island. Crehan, who graduated from Providence in 1987, was one of the top goalkeepers to ever play for the Friars. In 1983, he was a member of the Friar squad which finished with a 13-3-2 record and earned the Friars' first berth in the NCAA Tournament. The following season, he established a school record with 11 shutouts and led PC to a 14-2-2 mark. Crehan made 230 saves in his career and finished with a 1.19 goals against average. Crehan is single and resides in Walpole, Massachusetts.
