NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Providence College men's soccer team and Southern Connecticut played to a 0-0 tie in an exhibition game at the Autumn Classic in New Haven, Conn., on Friday, August 27.
Southern Conn., which is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the preseason Division II coaches' poll, outshot the Friars, 13-1. PC freshman goalkeeper Michael Cardenas (Framingham, Mass.) made a spectacular save on Alex Rincon's free kick in the 85th minute to preserve the tie for the Friars. The teams did not play overtime due to the match's exhibition status.
PC goalkeepers Danny Glynn (Manchester, England) and Cardenas combined recorded five saves for the Friars. Andrew Olivieri made one stop in net for the Owls.
Providence College returns to action on Saturday, August 28 in its final exhibition game against Dowling College of Oakdale, N.Y. at 5:00 p.m. at the Autumn Classic Soccer Tournament. The Friars will open the season on Wednesday, Sept. 2 against BIG EAST foe Boston College at 4:00 p.m. at the Brooks School in North Andover, Mass.
