WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Providence College and Army skated to a 4-4 tie in men's hockey action at Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y., on Friday, January 14.
Fernando Pisani gave the Friars a 1-0 lead when he snapped a shot high into the top corner of the net from the right face off circle at 12:17 of the first period. Providence could not stay out of the penalty box and at the 17:51 mark of the first period Army evened the score on a goal by Mike Fairman during a five-on-three power play. Mike Fisher sent a blast from the right point that PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer stopped, but Fairman fired in the rebound to tie the score at 1-1.
Providence took advantage of a power-play to break a 1-1 tie at 4:36 of the second period. Peter Fregoe took a pass at the bottom of the circle and blasted a low shot past Army goaltender Corey Winer. PC increased its lead with goals by Doug Sheppard at 8:14 and Nick Lent at 9:29 of the second period. The Cadets continued their strong play in man-advantage situations as John Williams scored a power-play goal at 13:10 of the second period to cut the Friars' lead to 4-2.
The Cadets continued to chip away at the Friar lead and got within one goal when K.C. Finnegan scored from the right corner to make the score 4-3 at 4:23 of the third. Army tied the score at 4-4 when Tim Murphy fired in a rebound at 11:47 of the third period. The Friars finished the period with a flurry but could not put the puck past Winer who finished the third period with 17 saves.
The Friars will return to action against Brown on Tuesday, January 18 in the 14th Annual Mayor's Cup at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
