St. Cloud, Minn... --The eighth-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the St. Cloud Saints, 7-1 in women's hockey action, on January 21, at St. Cloud's National Hockey Center. Junior forward Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) led the Friar attack scoring two goals and one assist.
Tabb's first goal gave the Friars a 1-0 lead, at the end of one period of play. St. Cloud's Rachel Denner, tied the game at one, five minutes into the second. PC responded, rattling off six unanswered goals, four in three minute span, to finish off the Saints, 7-1.
Freshman Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.) notched the game-winning goal for the Friars. Contributing to the Friar offense, were senior Jennifer Bill (Minnestrista, Minn.), junior Holley Tyng (E. Orleans, Mass.), freshman Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) and Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) with a goal each.
Friars goalie Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) stopped 10 shots in 54 minutes of play, before being relieved by Brigid Keady (Glencoe, Ill.), while Sandra Diaz-Arntzen turned away 44 shots for St. Cloud.
Providence record stands at 12-5-3 overall, 7-4-3 in the ECAC, the Saints move to 7-11-2 and 2-10-2 in the WCHA.
The Friars and Saints will close out their two game series, January 22, at 4:05 p.m. and the National Hockey Center.
