PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Jay Shaw broke a 1-1 tie with a goal 3:11 of the third period as the UMass-Amherst Minutemen went on to earn a 3-1 win against Providence College in HOCKEY EAST action on Saturday, January 8 in Providence, R.I.
Despite outshooting the Minutemen, 10-2 in the first period the Friars were unable to put the puck past UMass goaltender Markus Helanen and the period ended tied at 0-0.
UMass opened the scoring in the second period with a short-handed goal at 7:05. Jeff Blanchard fired in a rebound during a breakaway to give the Minutemen a 1-0 lead. The Friars pressed for the equalizer and finally got a shot past Helanen at 8:53 of the second period. Nick Lent pushed in a rebound during a goal-mouth scramble for the Friars' only tally of the game.
The Minutemen gained a 2-1 lead as Shaw took the puck out of the corner and slid a low shot under Friar netminder Boyd Ballard for what proved to be the game-winning goal. UMass' Kris Wallis sealed the win with a goal at 14:27 of the third period.
Helanen played strong in net for UMass, recording 38 saves. Ballard recorded 18 saves for Providence.
With the win, UMass raised its record to 8-9-2 overall and 2-6-1 in HOCKEY EAST play, while Providence fell to 11-9 overall and 3-7 in league action.
Providence College will return to action on January 14 at West Point, N.Y. against Army.
