PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Peter Fregoe tallied goals in the first and third period to lead the 13th-ranked Providence College Friars to a 3-1 upset over 10th-ranked Northeastern in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, November 17, 2000 at PC's Schneider Arena.
Neither team was able to produce much offense in the opening 20 minutes of play as the Huskies outshot the Friars, 8-6, in the first period.
Fregoe netted the first goal of the game when he took a nifty pass from Devin Rask across the goal mouth and one-timed a shot past Northeastern goaltender Mike Gilhooly at the 4:15 mark of the second period. The Friars wasted little time building on the lead as J.J. Picinic redirected a shot from the point past Gilhooly at 5:20 of the second period. The Friars were threatening for more when Joe Mastronardi changed the momentum by finishing off an odd-man rush by snapping a shot past Friar netminder Nolan Schaefer at 11:25 to cut PC's lead in half.
The game went back and forth in the third period before Fregoe broke in alone on Gilhooly and beat him with a wrist shot to the short side at the 15:02 mark to seal the win for PC.
Schaefer made 28 stops and improved to 5-1-0 on the season. Gilhooly recorded 29 stops for the Huskies. With the win, the Friars improved to 6-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST action, while Northeastern dropped to 5-3-1 and 2-2-1 in league play. Providence College will return to action on Friday, November 18 at Northeastern's Matthews Arena at 7:00 p.m.
