PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Led by sophomore Devin Rask's first career hat trick, the 14th-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the ninth-ranked Maine Black Bears, 5-3, in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, November 3, 2000 at PC's Schneider Arena.
The Friars took an early 3-0 lead with three tallies in the first 17 minutes of the game. PC's Doug Wright opened the scoring at the 4:55 mark tipping in a Regan Kelly shot from the point. Less than one minute later, Kelly intercepted a Black Bear pass at center ice, found a streaking Devin Rask, who beat Maine goaltender Matt Yeats with a backhander, giving the Friars a 2-0 lead. At 16:27, PC made it 3-0 on Rask's second goal, assisted by Peter Fregoe and Jon DiSalvatore.
The Black Bears cut the Friar lead to 3-1 at the 14:07 mark of the second period on a Chris Heisten power-play goal, assisted by Lucas Lawton and Robert Liscak.
The Friars seemed to have the game put away when they increased their lead to 4-1 just 18 seconds into the third on an Adam Lee goal. However, the Black Bears came storming back on Dan Kerluke's short-handed goal at 5:45 and Tom Reiman's tally at 13:30, which put the Friars' defense on its heals. PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer responded and closed the door on the Black Bears, recording 12 of his 39 saves in the third period. Rask's third goal, an empty net tally, sealed the victory for the Friars.
Maine's goaltender Matt Yeats recorded nine saves in 20 minutes, while Matt Morrison stopped 14 shots in 39 minutes of relief work.
With the win, the Friars' record improved to 4-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in HOCKEY EAST action and PC earned its first win over the Black Bears since a 7-2 victory on December 6, 1997. With the loss, the Black Bears dropped to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in HOCKEY EAST.
Providence College will return to action on Saturday, November 5, at the 15th annual Mayor's Cup versus Brown at Meehan Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.
