PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The eighth-ranked Providence College Friars were defeated by the Merrimack Warriors, 4-1, in college hockey action on Friday, December 1, 2000 at PC's Schneider Arena.
Merrimack came out off the gate flying and took an early 2-0 lead. At the 7:18 mark, Ryan Kiley tipped in a Stephen Moon shot to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Merrimack extended its lead at the 11:04 mark as Kiley netted his second goal of the game, assisted by Moon and Pyliotis. Moon's pass reached a streaking Kiley at the right face-off circle. Kiley gathered the passed and fired a shot high, beating Friar goaltender Nolan Schaefer.
The Friars pulled to within one goal at the 14:48 mark of the first period. Jay Leach fired a shot from the point that slipped past the screened Merrimack goaltender, Tom Exter, for the Friars' first goal. Leach's power-play goal was assisted by Matt Libby and Marc Suderman.
In the second period, neither team was able to produce much offense, as the Friars out shot the Warriors, 7-4.
The Warriors scored quickly in the third, as they extended their lead, 3-1. Merrimack controlled the opening face-off and Anthony Aquino fired a shot that Schaefer deflected. Nick Parillo knocked in the rebound for the Warriors' third goal at the 00:28 mark of the third, a power-play goal.
Kiley notched the game's final goal, his third of the night, unassisted at 16:20 of the third. Kiley capitalized on a Friar turnover in the PC defensive zone and wristed a shot past Schaefer as the Warriors skated to a 4-1 victory.
Exter recorded 28 stops for Merrimack and Schaefer stopped 20 shots in the loss.
With the loss, the Friars drop to 7-3-3 overall and 4-2-1 in HOCKEY EAST action, while Merrimack improve to 7-7-1 and 3-5-0 in league play.
Providence College will return to action on Saturday, December 2 at Merrimack's Volpe Complex at 7:00 p.m.
