LOWELL, Mass. -- Providence College defeated UMass-Lowell, 5-3, in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, February 25 at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. Freshman center Devin Rask led the Friars with two goals.
With each team failing to score on a number of opportunities, UMass-Lowell tallied the first goal of the game after 37:47 of action. John Campbell deflected a shot past Friar netminder Boyd Ballard with 2:13 remaining in the second period to give the River Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Friars came out flying in the third period tallying three consecutive goals in the first 3:36 of the third period to take a 3-1 lead. Fernando Pisani, Peter Fregoe, Josh MacNevin and Rask all scored for the Friars in the third period. The River Hawks got goals in the third from Chris Gustafson and Ed McGrane.
Ballard made 39 saves for the Friars while Jimi St. John made 18 saves for UMass-Lowell.
With the win, Providence improved to 17-15-1 overall and 9-12 in HOCKEY EAST action, while UMass fell to 8-21-3 overall and 4-15-3 in league play.
The Friars will return to action against UMass-Lowell on Saturday, February 26 at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
