PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Erron Maxey scored 16 points and 21 rebounds to help Providence come back to beat Boston College 45-40 in the lowest scoring game in Big East Conference history on Saturday.
The previous lowest scoring game was a 45-42 win by Miami over St. John's in 1992.
Boston College shot 26 percent and Providence shot 29 percent for the game. Both teams made 7 of 31 field goal attempts in the second half.
Kenny Harley's 12 points led Boston College (10-18, 2-13). Troy Bell, the Eagles' leading scorer at 20.3 points per game, is out for the rest of the season after suffering a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee on Feb. 23 in a game against Pittsburgh.
BC led 21-20 at halftime and went out to a 29-21 lead midway through the second half on a basket by Michael Cotton. Donta Wade then sparked the Friars by scoring 11 of his 13 points the rest of the way, including two 3-pointers.
Wade's three-pointer with 4:58 left tied the score at 35. Maxey's two free throws gave Providence (11-16, 4-10) the lead 36 seconds later, but Xavier Singletary answered with a three-pointer to give Boston College its last lead, 38-37.
Wade hit another three-pointer with 3:09 left and the Friars outscored BC 8-2 the rest of the way.
