PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated 14th-ranked Northeastern, 3-1, in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, February 4 at PC's Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Friars swept the season series from the Huskies, 3-0, and improved to 5-5 against ranked teams this season.
Doug Sheppard got the Friar offense going in the first period when he took a pass from Drew Omicioli and backhanded a shot past NU netminder Mike Gilhooly at the top of the crease at 15:31.
NU's Willie Levesque put the Huskies on the scoreboard with his seventh goal of the season at 16:40 of the second period. Levesque broke down the left side and fired a wrist shot past PC goaltender Boyd Ballard for Northeastern's only goal of the night.
Nick Lent broke the 1-1 tie when he fired a wrist shot at the net from NU's blueline that eluded a screened Gilhooly and found the back of the goal at the 4:54 mark of the third period. Ballard made a number of acrobatic saves to preserve the Friar lead before Omicioli tallied an empty net goal at 19:32 of the third to seal the win for PC.
Ballard played very strong in net for PC, making 36 stops in the victory. Gilhooly recorded 23 saves for Northeastern.
