ORONO, Maine -- The Maine Black Bears defeated Providence College, 5-3, in the first game of the HOCKEY EAST best-of-three Quarterfinal Series on Thursday, March 9 at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.
The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead at 3:33 of the first period when Jim Leger took a rebound off a blocked shot and skated the length of the ice before wristing a high shot past Friar netminder Boyd Ballard. The Friars evened the game at 13:28 of the first period when Matt Libby broke down the left wing and fired a pass towards the front of the net that deflected off a Maine player past Black Bear goaltender Matt Yeats.
Maine took advantage of its first power-play opportunity to take a 2-1 lead when Niko Dimitrakos wristed in a rebound through a screen at the 5:58 mark of the second period. The Black Bears built on their lead at 9:02 of the second period when Ben Guite tipped a shot past Ballard. Maine continued to hurt the Friars on the power play as Guite again redirected a shot past Ballard at 12:53 of the second period. After Maine's fourth goal, PC regrouped and scored two goals to close the period, trailing 4-3. Fernando Pisani netted his 14th goal of the season for the Friars at 15:57 after finishing off a two-on-one break in. The Friars' Jon DiSalvatore closed out the scoring in the period as he snapped a shot in from the left faceoff circle at the 16:39 mark.
Maine's Brendan Walsh added a power-play empty net goal of 19:40 of the third period to seal the win for Maine.
With the win, Maine improved to 23-7-5 overall, while Providence fell to 18-17-2 overall.
The Friars and the Black Bears will return to action on Friday, March 10 in the second game of the Quarterfinal Series at Alfond Arena at 7:00 p.m.
