KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine defeated Providence College, 2-1, in men's soccer action on Friday, September 1 in Kingston, R.I.
Maine forward Greg Bajek netted the only goal of the first half at 12:16 to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead when he scored on a cross from the corner. The Friars evened the game at 1-1 as Matt O'Toole scored on an indirect kick at 62:07. However, with 3:46 remaining in the game, a Maine player was hauled down in the box and the Black Bears were granted a penalty kick. Russell Hutchison converted on the penalty kick for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Maine goalkeeper Mat Cosgriff made two saves in the win. PC junior goalie Danny Glynn recorded one save for the Friars.
With the victory, Maine raised its record to 1-0 overall, while Providence fell to 0-1 overall.
Providence College returns to action on Sunday, September 3 at the University of Rhode Island at 2:00 p.m.
