OMAHA, NEBRASKA. -- The sixth-ranked Providence College men's ice hockey team was defeated, 6-3, by third-ranked Michigan on Friday, October 12 in the first round of the Maverick Stampede. The tournament was held in Omaha, Nebraska in the Civic Auditorium in front of a crowd of 8,314.

Michigan scored two-straight goals within the first five minutes of action to take an early, 2-0 lead. The first Wolverine goal came on a power play at the 3:21 mark of the first period as Jason Ryznar tallied his second goal of the season. Teammates Mike Komisarek and Jed Ortmeyer were credited with the assist. David Moss increased the Wolverine lead by two goals, as he deflected a pass from Milan Gajic into the upper left side of the net.

Junior Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn) tallied the Friars' first goal of the game, short handed, at 12:57 of the first period to make the score 2-1. DiSalvatore deflected the puck into the upper right hand corner of the net on a pass from sophomore Jason Platt (Portola Valley, Calif.). Junior Doug Wright (Kamsack, Saskatchewan) also earned an assist on the goal as he cleared the puck up-ice to Platt.

Michigan rallied to make the score 3-1 as John Shouneyia scored with 2:01 remaining in the first period off assists from Joe Kautz and Michael Woodford.

In the second period PC attacked first to make the score 3-2, in favor of Michigan. Sophomore Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) was credited with the goal as he rifled a shot from the right side of the ice, just inside the blue line. Michigan went on to score three unanswered goals before the intermission to make the score 6-2.

The Wolverines began their scoring streak at the 9:19 mark of the second period. Freshman Dwight Helminen connected on his first goal of the season, unassisted, as the puck barely cleared the goal line during a scramble in front of the net. Freshman Eric Nystrom scored Michigan's second goal of the period to make the score 5-2. He was assisted by senior Jay Vancik and Helminen. Michigan pushed the lead to 6-2, with 34 seconds remaining in the period, as Ortmeyer collected the puck directly in front of the Friars' net approximately 10-yards out. He put the left handed shot into the upper left-hand-side of the net. The goal came on the power play, and was assisted by junior Mike Cammalleri and Komisarek.

In the third period DiSalvatore scored his second goal of the game to make the score 6-3. It was the only goal of the period as the Friars held the Wolverines scoreless.

Providence falls to 0-1 overall to start the season and will face the loser of the Nebraska-Omaha versus Minnesota Deluth at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13.
