The seventh-ranked Brown University women's hockey team defeated Providence College, 4-0, in the seventh annual Mayor's Cup on Sunday, December 9 at PC's Schneider Arena.
The Bears scored the only goal they would need at the 3:36 mark of the first period as senior Kristy Zamora (Oshwa, Ont.) scored the first of her three goals to put Brown ahead, 1-0, after one period. The Friars had a chance to open the scoring but Brown's goaltender Pam Dreyer (Eagle River, Alaska) made a big save on senior Angela Hill's (Pascoag, R.I.) breakaway attempt two minutes into the game.
In the second period neither team could score. PC outshot Brown, 10-9, in the period and went 0-2 on the power play. For the game, the Friars outshot Brown, 31-22, but could not convert on power play (0-5). Dreyer stopped all 31 Providence shots in the win, while sophomore Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) made 18 saves in the loss.
The Bears erupted for three third period goals in a span of 1:21 to put the game out of reach. Junior Kim Insalaco (Rochester, N.Y.) made the score, 2-0, at the 5:03 mark, while Zamora tallied two more goals just 23 seconds apart.
With the loss, the Friars fell to 5-8-2 overall, while Brown improved to 5-5-1.
The Honorable Mayor Vincent A. Cianci presented the Mayor's Cup to the Bears.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, January 4, 2002 as they travel to Maine to face the Black Bears at Orono, Maine.
