DURHAM, N.H.. -- The eighth-ranked Providence College Friars were defeated by the ninth-ranked New Hampshire Wildcats, 3-1, in HOCKEY EAST action on Saturday, February 10 at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.
The Friars tallied the game's first goal at the 17:53 mark of the first period. Jay Leach made a cross-ice pass to Shawn Weiman in the defensive zone, Weiman then fired a pass to Rask who had slipped behind the Wildcats' defense. Rask then broke in all alone with New Hampshire's goaltender Ty Conklin and beat him with a high wrist-shot.
At the 2:39 mark of the second period New Hampshire tied the game 1-1, on Jeff Haydar's third goal of the season. Haydar snapped a low shot from the right face-off circle that slipped past PC netminder Boyd Ballard. The Wildcats took their first lead of the night at the 14:11 mark of the second period. On the power-play, Colin Hemingway skated in front of the crease and made a nifty around-the-back move to beat Ballard for a 2-1 Wildcat lead.
It looked as if the Friars would enter the locker room trailing by just goal, but New Hampshire struck again. With five seconds remaining in the second period, Josh Pruden caught a deflected puck in front of Ballard, dropped it and fired a shot past the Friars' netminder for a 3-1 New Hampshire lead.
The Wildcats controlled play most of the night as they out shot the Friars by a 30-16 margin. Conklin stopped only 15 shots in the victory, while Ballard stopped 27 shots in the loss.
With the win, New Hampshire improved to 18-8-6 overall, 9-6-5 in league play, while Providence dropped to 16-8-4 overall and 10-6-2 in HOCKEY EAST action.
The Friars will return to action against Boston University on Friday, February 16 at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
