NEW YORK (AP) - John Linehan had 13 points and Abdul Mills added 12 as Providence defeated St. John's 64-53 to sweep their Big East Conference season series Wednesday night.
It was the first time the Friars swept St. John's in the regular season since 1986-87, when they also beat the Red Storm in the Big East tournament.
The Friars (18-6, 9-3) have won seven of their last eight and their 7-2 road record is the best in the conference.
Omar Cook, who shot only 5-for-18, 2-12 from 3-point range, topped the Red Storm (13-10, 7-5) with 16 points. Anthony Glover added 10.
St. John's, which has lost three of its last four, was 4-for-23 on 3-pointers, while the Friars were 6-for-15.
Providence led 32-31 at the half.
Alpha Bangura's three-point play got St. John's as close as 41-40 after 5:31 of the second half. Then Providence went on a 13-2 run, getting 3-pointers by Maris Laksa, Mills and Chris Anrin, who also hit a jumper in the spurt.
The Red Storm got to 57-51 with 4:02 to go on a 3-pointer by Willie Shaw, who was only 2-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Providence got its next seven points from the free throw line, six by Linehan, to take the biggest lead of the game at 64-51 with 31.1 seconds to go.
