PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The ninth-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the Boston University Terriers, 4-3, in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, February 16 at PC's Schneider Arena. Shawn Weiman scored on a blast from the right point at 3:31 of the third period for what proved to be the game winner for the Friars.
The Friars' J.J. Picinic tallied the game's first goal at the 2:57 mark of the first period. Picinic received a pass in the right face-off circle a ripped a slap shot past Terriers' goaltender Sean Fields, giving the Friars a 1-0 lead. The goal was Picinic's ninth tally of the season and his first goal since November 25, 2000. At the 13:32 mark, BU tied the game, 1-1, on Pat Aufiero's fifth goal of the season. During a scrum in front of the Friars' net, Aufiero fired a shot past PC's netminder Nolan Schaefer.
The Friars regained the lead at the 3:24 mark of the second period. PC's Doug Wright dumped the puck into the Friars' zone from the blue-line and it bounced under Fields' pads. The Friars extended their lead to 3-1 at the 3:48 mark of the second period. PC's Devin Rask received a pass from Peter Fregoe at the left face-off circle and ripped a slap shot past Fields. The Terriers closed to within one goal with 2:12 remaining in the second period when Mike Pandolfo scored the Terriers' second power-play goal of the night.
PC regained its two-goal lead with 16:29 remaining on Weiman's second goal of the season. The Terriers kept the pressure on the Friars and got within one goal when Pandolfo finished off a two-on-one break in and netted his second goal of the night. BU pulled its goaltender with 1:09 remaining in the game but could not get the tying goal past Schaefer who finished with 25 saves.
With the win, the Friars improved to 17-8-4 overall and 11-6-2 in HOCKEY EAST, while Boston University fell to 12-15-2 and 8-9-2 in league play.
Providence College will return to action on Saturday, February 17 at Boston University at 7:00 p.m.
