PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 13th ranked Providence College men's hockey team defeated Minnesota State, Mankato, 5-1, on Friday, October 18 at PC's Schneider Arena. With the win, the Friars improved to 3-0.
After a scoreless first period in which Minnesota State outshot Providence, 14-10, Friar defenseman Jason Platt (Portola Valley, Calif.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead at the 3:57 mark of the second period. Platt's goal was his first of the season. Less than three minutes later, senior co-captain Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. After PC center Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) won the faceoff in the defensive zone, sophomore Jeff Mason (East Hampton, Conn.) fired a long pass off the right wing board to a streaking Di Salvatore. DiSalvatore collected the puck at the blue line and skated in alone on MSU goaltender Jason Jensen and tucked the puck into the lower right corner.
Mavericks' Grant Stevenson scored the lone goal for MSU to cut the lead to 2-1 at 14:37 of the second period. However, the Friars quickly responded and went ahead, 3-1, on junior Mike Robinson's first goal of the season at 15:42 of the second period. Junior Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta) also scored his first goal of the season on increase PC's lead to, 4-1, at 8:15 of the third period on a power play. Fregoe closed out the scoring with his team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 14:47 mark of the third period.
Friar Head Coach Paul Pooley was pleased with his team's effort. "We did a good job working the puck down low in the offensive end," Pooley said. "Nolan Schaefer did a great job for us tonight in goal, especially on the power play. Their puck movement was impressive and we will have our hands full on Saturday night."
Friar senior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) was named the first star after his strong performance with 39 saves. The Mavericks outshot the Friars, 40-36.
The two teams are back in action Saturday, October 19 at Schneider Arena.
