STORRS, Conn. -- The seventh-ranked Connecticut Huskies defeated Providence College, 2-1, in BIG EAST men's soccer action on Wednesday, October 9 in Storrs, Conn.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard very quickly as Providence was whistled for a hand ball in the box, which gave UConn at penalty kick just 1:01 into the game. UConn's Cesar Cuellar converted on the penalty kick to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The Friars tied the game at 1-1 at the 40:02 mark when senior Todd Stigliano (Newington, Conn.) lofted a ball over UConn goalkeeper Adam Schuerman. The game did not remain tied for long as Andres Rota banked in a shot off the goalpost for what would prove to be the game-winning goal for UConn at 41:24.
Neither team was able to score in a closely played second half in which the Huskies held a 5-4 shot advantage.
Friar sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Newman (Northboro, Mass.) made five stops in the loss.
With the win, Connecticut improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in BIG EAST action, while Providence fell to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Providence College returns to action on Saturday, October 12 against West Virginia at PC's Glay Field at 1:00 p.m.
