The No. 8 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Maine, 5-0, on Sunday, November 10 at Alfond Arena to sweep the weekend series. The Black Bears started the game quickly as they outshot the Friars, 12-4, and had numerous odd-man rushes in the first period. Freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) kept Providence in the game by making several spectacular saves to keep Maine off of the scoreboard. The Friars came out for the second period with more jump and turned the tables on the Black Bears. Providence outshot Maine, 14-9, in the period and scored twice to go ahead, 2-0. Senior Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) put the Friars in front at the 2:30 mark in the period after picking up a loose rebound and putting the puck in the empty net. Culgin was assisted on the goal by junior Kelli Halcisak (Grande Ile, Mich.) and senior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.). Just over two minutes later junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) received a pass from Butsch and junior Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) from the corner and beat goalie Lara Smart low to the glove side. Late in the third period Providence turned up their pressure and were able to score three more goals. The first was scored by Butsch as she buried the rebound off of a shot from Halcisak who had received a cross-ice pass from Roth. The second goal of the period was scored by Culgin, her second on the day, with an assist from sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.). The third goal of the period and fifth of the game was scored by Stephenson, who received a pass from Payton that sent her in on a breakaway with the Black Bear goaltender. Providence outshot Maine, 31-28, while Bugden made 28 saves for her second consecutive shutout and the third of her career. Bugden improved her record to 4-2-1 on the year and helped the Friars move to 4-3-1 for the season. Friar players were awarded all three stars of the game. Jana Bugden was named the third star for the second consecutive game, Darlene Stephenson got the second star for her two goal performance. Danielle Culgin received the first star of the game as she scored what proved to be the game-winner in the first period and the fourth goal of the game .
