PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Providence College defeated the University of Pittsburgh, 4-2, in BIG EAST men's soccer action on Saturday, November 2 in Pittsburgh, Pa. PC freshman forward Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) scored two goals, including the game winner to lead the Friars.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute as sophomore Jeff Smith (Omaha, Neb.) scored off a cross from senior Jonathan Alva-Cavero (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.). PC increased its lead to 2-0 as freshman Derek Nobrega (Cumberland, R.I.) scored on a breakaway in the 30th minute. For Nobrega, it was his first collegiate goal.
In the second half, the Panthers cut the Friars' lead to 2-1 in the 69th minute as Bryan Hopper scored on a breakaway. However, less than two minutes later, Lynch scored what proved to be the game winner in the 71st minute. Pittsburgh cut the lead to 3-2, but Lynch struck again in the 90th minute to secure the win. Lynch leads the team in scoring with seven goals.
With the win, Providence improved to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in BIG EAST action, while Pittsburgh fell to 8-8-1 overall and 2-7-1 in league play.
Providence College returns to action on Monday, November 4 against Villanova at 1:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field.
