PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Lindsay Whalen scored 19 points, and No. 12 Minnesota overcame a sluggish first half with an 11-0 run that proved decisive in a 67-55 victory Friday night over Providence.

Whalen and Corrin Von Wald scored four points each during an 11-0 run as Minnesota (6-0) broke open a close game. Von Wold added 16.

Michal Epstein led Providence (2-4) with a season-high 21 points.

Minnesota led 46-44 in the second half when Von Wald sank a pair of free throws and Whalen finished off a fast break. After Kim Prince hit one free throw, Von Wald muscled home a layup, Prince buried a jumper and Whalen hit two more free throws for a 57-44 lead with 7:02 to play.

Prince added 11 points for the Gophers, who scored 18 points off 22 Providence turnovers.

The Gophers, off to the best start in school history, hit just six of their first 17 shots and the Friars built a 14-11 lead.

But Whalen led 17-11 Minnesota rally for a 28-22 lead. She scored on a driving layup, and later buried a 3-point shot. Then she sank a jumper from the lane and scored on a fast break.

Epstein, whose 13 first-half points were one more than her season average, scored four points in the final 3:06 as the Friars pulled within 33-32 at halftime.
