Women's Basketball Defeats Rhode Island, 63-55

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Rhode Island, 63-55, on Sunday, December 22 in Kingston, R.I. Sophomore guard Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) registered a game and career-high 25 points for the Friars, while sophomore guard Keisha Blackwell (Baltimore, Md.) tallied a career-high 14 points.
The Friars started the game on a 18-4 run through the first 9:53 of the first half to earn what proved to be their largest lead of the game. The Rams did not score their first field goal of the game until the 12:51 mark of the half. PC held URI to a dismal 23.1 percent from the field (six-of-26) in the first half. In the final 10:07 of the first half, URI went on a 16-8 run to cut the Friars' lead to six at the half.
In the second half, URI was able to cut the deficit to two points on two separate occassions, but the Friars would answer with an Epstein three-pointer (18:43) and two-point field goal (8:25) to maintain their lead throughout the game. Epstein scored 17 of her career-high 25 points in the second half.
Sophomore Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) recorded a season-high nine rebounds and added eight points and team-high three steals for the Friars. Senior Kacee Wheeler (Bakersfield, Calif.) tied a career-high in the game with seven rebounds. Senior Andrea Horvath (Sopron, Hungary) also pulled down seven rebounds, marking a career-high.
Providence improves to 3-5 overall on the season and will return to action on December 28 at St. Bonaventure in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2:15 p.m. Rhode Island was led by Shayla Johnson and Denise King, who scored 21 points and 16 points, respectively.
