NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Providence College men's soccer opened the season with a 2-1 victory against Sacred Heart on Friday, August 30 at the Central Connecticut State Tournament in New Britain, Conn. It marks the first time the Friars opened the season with a victory since 1999.

The Friars took a quick 1-0 lead in the game when freshman Ian Wexler (Minnetonka, Minn.) took a pass from Brian Baker (Annapolis, Md.) and scored on a breakaway. The Friars increased their lead to 2-0 in the 24th minute as freshman Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) redirected a cross from senior Mauricio Solano (Coral Springs, Fla.). Sacred Heart scored its only goal of the contest at 28:01 on a blast from the top of the box by Alan Tomczykowski.

Friar senior goalkeeper Michael Greulich (Cincinnati, Ohio) made three saves in the win. Jason Roeder recorded three stops in the loss for Sacred Heart.

With the win, Providence improved to 1-0 overall, while Sacred Heart fell to 0-1 overall.

Providence College returns to action on Sunday, September 1 at Central Connecticut at 2:00 p.m.
