NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Central Connecticut State, 2-1, on Sunday, September 1 at the Central Connecticut State Tournament in New Britain, Conn.

The Blue Devils got on the scoreboard first when Gareth Wilkinson redirected a corner kick past Friar senior goalkeeper Michael Greulich (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the 28th minute. Fahad Al-Batroni increased Central Connecticut's lead to 2-0 as he scored on a blast from 15 yards out.

The Friars cut the Blue Devils' lead in half when senior Mauricio Solano (Coral Springs, Fla.) scored off a penalty kick in the 69th minute. PC pressured the Blue Devils for the final 10 minutes of the game, but were not able to get the equalizer.

Central Connecticut goalkeeper Jeff Branetti registered five stops in the win. Greulich made three saves for Providence.

Providence freshmen Brian Baker (Annapolis, Md.), Anthony Petrarca (Johnston, R.I.) and Ian Wexler (Minnetonka, Minn.) were named to the all-tournament team.

With the win, Central Connecticut improved to 2-0 overall, while Providence fell to 1-1.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, September 7 against Rutgers at 1:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field.
