PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence senior Mauricio Solano (Coral Springs, Fla.) scored two goals to lead the Friars to a 3-0 win against Syracuse in men's BIG EAST soccer action at Providence, R.I., on Saturday, September 28. For the Friars, it marked their first win at home against Syracuse since 1990 and their first BIG EAST win since the 2000 season.

Solano gave the Friars a 1-0 lead just 10:01 into the game when he headed in a cross off a direct kick from the right side. Providence freshman Eoin Lynch was pulled down in the box by a Syracuse defender at 22:17, which created a penalty kick situation for the Friars. Solano successfully converted on the penalty kick with a blast into the left corner of the net. Providence sophomore Jeff Smith (Omaha, Neb.) recorded the final goal of the game when he blasted a in a shot from 25 yards out at 38:12.

Syracuse pressured in the second half and outshot the Friars, 9-3, during the final 45 minutes of action. However, the Providence defense held off the Orangemen to earn the team's first shutout of the season.

Providence sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Newman (Northboro, Mass.) recorded four stops in the win. Syracuse freshman goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ontario) made five stops in the loss.

With the win, Providence improved to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in BIG EAST action, while Syracuse fell to 5-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in league play.

Providence College returns to action on Tuesday, October 1 at Harvard at 3:30 p.m.
