PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 20th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights defeated the Providence College Friars, 3-0, in men's BIG EAST soccer action at Providence, R.I., on Saturday, September 7.

Rutgers got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when sophomore Chris Karcz (Clifton, N.J.) headed in a cross from freshman Yaron Shlomi (North Brunswick, N.J.). The Scarlet Knights increased their lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal by sophomore Wes Kirk (Bloomfield, N.J.) in the 36th minute. Kirk broke down the right side, eluded several defenders and blasted in a shot from 20 yards. Rutgers' freshman Sam Castellanos (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored the final goal of the game as he redirected a cross into the far right corner in the 58th minute.

Senior goalkeepr Ricky Zinter (Penfield, N.Y.) made four saves to earn the shutout. Friar senior goalkeeper Michael Greulich (Cincinnati, Ohio) played strong in net, recording nine stops.

With the win, Rutgers improved to 1-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST, while Providence fell to 1-2-0 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, September 14 against Georgetown at PC's Glay Field at Noon.
