PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Rutgers, 71-44, in BIG EAST Conference action on Tuesday, January 28 in Providence, R.I. Providence scored just 16 points in the second half, while the Scarlet Knights shot a blistering 60.5 percent (26-43) from the field for the game.
The Friars kept the game close through the first 4:10 of the game (7-9) before Rutgers went on a 10-0 scoring run to gain a 12-point (19-7) advantage at the 12:52 mark. Providence fought back to get within six points (21-15) with 9:33 remaining in the first half, but it would prove to be the closest the Friars would get to the Scarlet Knights the remainder of the game. Rutgers took a 43-28 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
In the second half, Providence held the Scarlet Knights to 28 points, but could only muster 16 points in their own offensive end enroute to the 27-point loss. Rutgers was led offensively by Cappie Pondexter and Mauri Horton who each chipped in a game-high 14 points. Pondexter also dished out a game-high seven assists and recorded three steals. Shalicia Hurns netted 10 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for the Scarlet Knights.
Sophomore guard Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) tallied 12 points to lead the Friars. Sophomore forward Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) added eight points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Senior guard Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) contributed seven points to the Providence effort. PC's 44 points marks the lowest offensive point total of the season.
Providence (8-10, 2-5 BIG EAST) returns to action on Saturday, February 1 as it faces Virginia Tech in a BIG EAST Conference match-up at 2:00 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va.
