AMHERST, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 5-4, at Massachusetts on Sunday, January 5 in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center. UMass' Thomas Pock scored a hat trick, including the game winner with 27 seconds left in the game to lift the Minutemen.
Providence took a 1-0 lead at the 7:51 mark of the first period when senior Doug Wright (Kamsack, Sask.) recorded his first goal and first point of the season off a scramble in front of the net.
UMass quickly tied the game in the second period on a goal by Tim Vitek at 1:13. The Friars regained the lead when senior Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) tallied his 10th goal of the season at 7:37. However, the Minutemen's Pock scored two power-play goals in less than four minutes to give UMass a 3-2 lead after two periods.
In the third period, the Friars tied the game at 3-3 on Stephen Wood's power-play goal at 5:20. The Minutemen came right back and took a 4-3 lead at 7:35 with on Vitek's second goal of the afternoon. PC junior Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Sask.) tied the game for the Friars at 4-4 with 5:16 left in the game. The Minutemen won the game with 27 seconds left in the game as Pock fired a slap shot from just inside the blue line that eluded PC's Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask), who was screened in front of the net.
The Friars will next play on Thursday, January 9 versus Boston University at Walter Brown Arena.
