The No. 9 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Maine, 2-1, on Saturday, November 22 at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.

The Friars opened the scoring in the first period when senior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) was able to keep the puck in the offensive zone on a penalty kill. Halcisak fired a shot from the point that junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) deflected past the Maine goaltender. The Black Bears answered at the 8:32 mark as Sonia Corriveau beat senior goaltender Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) from the edge of the crease. Providence outshot Maine, 12-7, in the first and were whistled for the only three penalties of the period.

The second period saw Maine get its first penalty of the game and the Friars were able to capitalize on the ensuing power play. Zimmerman cleanly won a face-off in the offensive zone back to senior Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) at the left point who quickly moved the puck to Halcisak at the right point. Halcisak fired a blast that eluded Maine goaltender Lara Smart to put the Friars ahead, 2-1, at the 11:04 mark. Providence outshot the Black Bears, 8-2, in the period.

Providence outshot Maine, 33-17. Quinlan earned her first win of the season making 16 saves, as the Friars improve to 3-3-2 overall on the season and 1-0-1 in HOCKEY EAST action, while Maine falls to 3-6-2 overall and 2-1 in HOCKEY EAST.

No. 9 Providence College returns to action on Sunday, November 23 when they play the second game of their weekend series with the University of Maine at Alfond Arena at 1:00 p.m.
