Providence Women's Track -- Day 1 At NCAA Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Friar women's track team competed in the first day of competition at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships on Wednesday, June 11 at California State University in Sacramento, Calif. Senior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland), who ran the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and sophomore Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland), who ran the 5,000 meters, each finished fourth in the preliminaries on Wednesday and qualified for the finals in their respective races. Senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.), who threw the javelin, was the third Friar to compete on Wednesday. She did not qualify for the javelin finals.

McGettigan placed second in her heat in a time of 10:06.86. Her time was the fourth best run in the steeplechase on Wednesday and qualified her automatically for the finals, which will be run on Friday, June 13 at 10:50 p.m. EST. McGettigan will attempt to earn her second consecutive All-America honor in the steeplechase. Last year, she placed eighth in a time of 10:08.24 to earn the honor. She will need to finish in the top eight again this year to receive All-America accolades.

Cullen also finished second in her heat and fourth overall in a time of 16:19.01 to qualify for the finals of the 5,000 meters on Saturday, June 14 at 11:40 p.m. EST. Cullen, who earned her first All-America honor in the fall when she finished 28th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship, is running in her first NCAA Outdoor Track Championship. She will need to finish in the top eight on Saturday to earn All-America honors. Freeburg, who was competing in her third consecutive NCAA Outdoor Track Championship in the javelin, placed eighth in her flight (43.52 meters) and 21st overall in the qualifying round on Wednesday.
