NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Providence College men's soccer team opened the season with a 6-1 victory against Sacred Heart on Friday, August 29 at the Central Connecticut State Soccer Cup in New Britain, Conn. It marks the first time the Friars scored six goals in a game since 1987.
Sophomore Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) led the Friars with three goals. Lynch opened the scoring 12 minutes into the game when he knocked in a pass from sophomore Anthony Petrarca (Johnston, R.I.). The Pioneers answered right back 16 seconds later knotting the score at one off a free kick goal from Ricarti Mendes. Senior Jonathan Rhode (Guilford, Conn.) gave the Friars a 2-1 lead going into halftime when he netted a goal from a Petrarca pass.
Providence scored four unanswered goals in the second half. Two back-to-back goals from Lynch completed his first collegiate hat trick with 27 minutes left in the game. Lynch connected with Rhode's passes on both of the goals at 50:49 and 57:16. Sophomore Ian Wexler (Minnetonka, Minn.) and freshman Paul Mihich (Roswell, Ga.) scored five minutes apart at 70:35 and 75:57 to give the Friars the 6-1 win.
With the win, Providence improved to 1-0 overall, while Sacred Heart fell to 0-1 overall.
Providence College returns to action on Sunday, August 31 at Central Connecticut at 2:00 p.m.
