PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers defeated the Providence College men's soccer team, 4-1, on Saturday, September 6 in the BIG EAST opener for both teams at Piscataway, N.J. Josh Gros led the Scarlet Knights with three goals and one assist.
Ricardo Arenas opened the scoring when he scored from the top of the box at 15:35 to give Rutgers a 1-0 lead. Fifteen minutes later, Gros scored his first goal of the contest. Gros tallied the final goal of the first half when he kicked in a shot through a screen of players at 42:37. He added his third goal of the contest at 65:26 to increase Rutgers' lead to 4-0. Friar sophomore Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) scored PC's only goal of the game when he converted on a penalty kick at 66:11.
Friar junior goalkeeper Jeff Newman (Northboro, Mass.) made four saves in the loss.
With the win, Rutgers improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in BIG EAST play, while Providence fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Providence College returns to action on Tuesday, September 9 in its home opener against Rhode Island at 4:00 p.m.
