Women's Indoor Track Competes at URI Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The Providence College women's indoor track team began the 2003-04 season at the University of Rhode Island on Friday, January 9.

Two Friars captured individual events and the distance medley relay team also recorded a first place finish. Junior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) finished first in the mile in a time of 4:49.18, 11 seconds ahead of teammate Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) who placed second in a time of 5:00.39. Cullen qualified for the BIG EAST and the ECAC Championships, while Cappello qualified for the BIG EAST Championship.

In the 1,000 meters, junior Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) captured the event in a time of 2:59.82. The distance medley relay team consisting of Cullen, sophomore Katie Boyle (Providence, R.I.), Byrne and Cappello also was victorious, finishing in a time of 11:54.37, which qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships.

The Friars return to competition on Saturday, January 17 at the Brown Invitational.
