Men's Hockey Ties Northeastern, 3-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore goaltender Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) made a career-high 47 saves and classmate Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) scored two goals, but it was not enough as the Providence College men's hockey team played to a 3-3 tie against Northeastern on Saturday, January 17 at Schneider Arena. The tie marked the second consecutive deadlock between the two teams and third this season.

The Friars wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as they scored just 42 seconds into the game. Junior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) took a pass at the blue line skated around the net and found a wide open Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) whose shot went under the pads of Northeastern netminder Keni Gibson. McDonald finished the game with a career-high three points (one goal and two assists). At 7:07, Gajda gave the Friars a 2-0 lead after a scramble in front of Gibson's net.

The Huskies came out firing in the second period, outshooting the Friars, 21-6. Northeastern made the score 2-1 on a power-play goal from in close by Brian Swiniarski at 5:50. Gajda again gave PC a two-goal cushion (3-1) with his 10th goal of the season at 8:29. Northeastern's Ray Ortiz pulled the Huskies within, 3-2, with a goal late in the second period.

In the third period, the Huskies pulled Gibson for an extra attacker and the move paid off as the Huskies were able to score the equalizer with 1:23 remaining in the third period as Mike Morris tallied his fifth goal of the season. Northeastern had a chance to win the game in overtime as they were on the power play for the last 1:22, but Goepfert was stellar in net as he turned aside a career-high 47 shots. Gibson made 31 saves for the Huskies.

The Friars return to action on Tuesday, January 20 in a rescheduled game against Boston College at Schneider Arena.
